This is the story all across the Caribbean. Belize is actually fairly safe compared to some other Caribbean nations…

Most recent news on Jeffrey Furgula……
The Canadian Consulate is working with the family who is in Belize. They do not believe the story provided by the police, and are looking for answers. They have brought the CBC ( Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ), one of the oldest and most respected networks in Canada, to help them. They can be relentless, and will find some answers for his family. They may even uncover some stuff they’ll wish they hadn’t.
I implore anyone in Belize who knows anything about this suspicious death, or Jeffrey’s movements that day to find the CBC, or contact the Canadian Consulate to tell them everything. The Belizean authorities will do nothing productive with any information they get, and it may even be detrimental to the teller. (IMO)
Having known quite a few diversely different Canadians for many years, I wasn’t surprised to hear my thoughts on this situation echoed by one who said this:
    **CanadianinSanPedro says:
    February 4, 2013 at 2:03 pm
@sickntired is correct. Not only that but many of my friends have stopped coming to Belize, and Mexico as well, because of all the bad publicity. I don’t think the GOB or the Police have grasped the power of the internet yet. Canadians won’t complain much, they’ll just go somewhere else, which is why Cuba’s tourist industry is booming. Cuba is one of the safest countries in the region and right now is FULL of Canadian and European tourists. If Belize wants to keep it’s tourism industry healthy, these kinds of incidents must stop.
This man was taken into custody by the police and in their care and control and therefore they had a responsibility for his well being, whether he was drunk or not.**
Other comments of disgust can be found accompanying the news stories.
As long as the family contends the ‘wicked drunk’ aspect, there is going to be lingering doubt that WILL result in a shift of Canadian cash away from Belize. If the truth about what happened doesn’t come out, could the new partnership between Belize and Canada regarding the ‘drug war’ be short lived?
And who will lose once again? The Belizean people. ಥ_ಥ

Seems like Belize is a place where you can take a vacation and have a great time, however going there to live doesn,t seem like a good idea. Latest casualty is a canadian who died in police custody, police say he was intocicated ,fell down and died, people who know him don,t belive it . Most people today looking for information on countries search the internet, Belize is getting so much bad press lately this will cause people to go elsewhere.Unfortunately short of a revolution in the short term nothing is going to change. Why is it that the worst people are in charge everywhere, change is coming, like a hurricane, everywhere.

    Dear John,

    Lead, eat, sleep & MOVE!

I just want to share some info here.

What is happening on the streets of Belize is horrible but remember it is happening as we are dying right here at home!

    I rec’d this in a email today,

“While sitting in a Chicago park with a group of volleyball teammates on Tuesday, a 15 year old girl named Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed.

Police said Hadiya, an honor student, was likely caught in the middle of gang turf wars. She was not affiliated with a gang herself.

Chances are, we might not even have heard of this sad event if Hadiya hadn’t performed with her high school band last week as part of President Obama’s inauguration festivities.

We might not have heard about it because, tragically, what happened to this innocent girl in Chicago is much too common.

Chicago has had at least 44 homicides already this year. Three days before Hadiya’s murder, seven people were killed in Chicago within 24 hours, the youngest a 16 year old boy. The mother of one of those shot had already lost her three other children to gun violence.

Last year, 7 year old Heaven Sutton was caught in a shooting and killed as she was selling candy and snow cones on the street outside her home.

In Chicago alone, more than 270 children have been killed since 2007. That’s almost 3 Newtowns per year in Chicago. Just the children.

Nationwide, a quarter of all gang-related killings strike children under the age of 18.

More than 500 people were killed in Chicago last year. That’s more than the number of coalition soldiers killed in Afghanistan in 2012.”

What Dr. Johnny is doing is HUGE, he has taken on a criminal Government, this is why I support him, rich or poor! I like to fight the BIG fight.

The whole world (Human Race) sucks when it comes to crime, from the bottom to the top period…

    Lead, eat, sleep & MOVE!

    Best wishes,
    GJ

And …well I’ll be, a teenage girl backstage at an Aerosmith concert! Thank God John got out when he did! And how he did it is fantastic! He kept going! He changed his mind in a moment of clarity. John cares about the regular people, he is down to earth realistic and adaptable. I’ve been all around the world and know the safest place for me is the good ole USA – Belize would be a safer place if it wasn’t for the facts as written, stated (above in Truth) here, the whole truth! Too many lies by the self serving corrupted officials. This enrages the common man, people in authority are criminals. Why would John say that he was wrong not to pay – the bribe? I believe it saved his life not to pay..and that he did everything perfect..he ran when he did it and oh how, exactly how – the world is a dangerous place but America gives more hope & help to more people around the world than any other country, this place is the best MHO..lo

Does it matter if you pay or fight your way through the door?

Money means nothing to me anymore, as I have found what I was searching for.

A person to love and cherish, even if she was poor!

A woman who loves and cherishes me even more.

Is anyone that matters really keeping score?

Amazing, that even Serbia, Vietnam or Lebanon are far safer than the US. Hmm… Does that mean that the Hezbollah are more peaceful than Americans? I get confused!

All you people whining about Belize. I was there just recently, and lots of locals don’t share your paranoid point of view. That is about Belize, this blog and J McF. I had a wonderful time there, ate lobster and yes, passed by one of J McF’s properties too. Have you ever, the sheepish flog of fans, been outside your home in the o’l US? Been to Belize? Do you even read news about your own country? Recent statistics say 27 children are murdered in the USA a week. That’s right. Take care of that, instead off following one rich dudes 15 minutes of fame. None of you, I bet my life on ts, including the teenage sexy operatives, LOL, would give a flying duck if all this story was real and done by a regular poor guy. You are like a bunch of teenagers screeming and wetting your undies at some rock band concert. Americans forgot to think for themselves, and you people prove it.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I can tell you that I don’t give a flying crap about John McAfee’s money. Some of us here may not be poor either. Anyway, I started following him after I had been to Belize in the fall of last year. I read the Wired story and I believed in John McAfee. I believed that he would be killed, if he were captured. I saw the prison in Belize City. I saw the GSU in full uniform at the Mayan Ruins. I didn’t and still don’t think that he killed GF. When he made it to America safely, I breathed a grateful sigh of relief. My purpose changed somewhat of why I still wanted to follow the blog. I admire him for his courage and strength to speak up when it’s not the most popular thing to do. He is a great teacher of many different things. He is a survivor. This blog is not nor has it ever been about any other country except in relationship to Belize. BTW if he were poor, I’d still follow his blog.

I have traveled and I am well read.
      .
I know about the crime in my country. But you see, you are comparing apples to cars. Yeah they aren’t even close. Belize has a population which about 3 times the size of my city I live in. In my city, it is rare for someone to be murdered. And there is no way it takes 2 months to solve a murder case.
.You would never see a dead body being carted out just loosely wrapped in a sheet and then thrown into the back of a pickup. You do realize that there 2 Belizes. There is the one you saw. the one they let you see. Then there is the real one. The one Tourists rarely see.
      .
Every country I have been to has aspects of that, a tourist version and a real version. Places like Belize just have a much more dramatic gap between the two.
      .
Money does not impress me. What attracted me to following this story is John’s intelligence, his personality. i find him fascinating.
      .
I read the initial news stories like everyone else, then I dug deeper. The further I researched the more fascinated I became. Belize is not unique, but John is.
      .
I often wonder why people like you bother to post such things. Where is your anger coming from?

There is no doubt most of us came here to witness the proverbial ‘train wreck’ we believed was ready to unfold. After all, it was sensationalism at its best, and we’d scored a front row seat. And you’re right, had it been a ‘regular poor guy’ people would not have cared. But it wasn’t, and an exciting, excessive, scandalous, often salacious world filled the pages, and we devoured it. But mixed in with the eccentric millionaire’s tale, our eyes were exposed to the unethical licentious behavior of Belizean Officials. Then followed the angst and distress of knowing that so many citizens were being adversely effected by this deplorable behavior.
While I have not been to Belize, I have been to many other island/’3rd world’ Countries. There are a multitude of similarities, from high poverty to limited education to wonderfully warm and kind people who welcome you with a genuine smile. And yes, I/we know corruption exists everywhere. Yet, this is somehow different.
It could be the shear volume of disturbing, ruthless and heinous acts we read about in the plethora of links. It could be the atrocious details simply being so foreign to the world we know.
But more likely, just like the story we covet, it has more depth and layers. Across the miles an unspoken bond has grown between complete strangers, brought together by curiosity and forged by a congeneric belief of Human Rights. We may never be able to provide a physical presence, but it’s inevitable that our support and encouragement regarding positive change does not waiver.
Fortunately, like most, I am fully capable of exerting effort in more than one direction. You would be an idiot to be unaware of the atrocious number of ‘death by gun’ tragedies occurring in the USA, or the detestable abuse perpetrated against girls around the World on a constant basis…. or the destruction of Syria, or the National Debt, or the rising Prison population, or……. Certainly you are intelligent enough to realize that you know nothing about anyone’s actions, causes or endorsements in the ‘real’ world. So please be polite enough not to allow baseless insults to govern your comments.

I think you make a good point. if i got in some deep shit and started a blog about it, nobody would give a fuck but if its someone who once made 100 million dollars, people are offering their houses, boats, and money to help them. I remember watching the dateline interview and i believe john said something to the effect that the people who love him on his blog are nuts because they dont even know him or have ever met him and yet claim to love him. and I admit, if this was a homeless persons blog, i wouldnt give a shit or even come to it in the first place. deep down some part of me hoped john would be like, hey ur pretty cool, wanna come aerotrekking with me and plunge some crazy drugs up our butts? But alas, it just doesnt work that way. to anyone who says theyd still give the same amount of support and attention to a poor persons blog, think to yourself, what other blogs do you follow? is their even one blog you follow, thats a poor person in need of help? i bet 90 percent of the time the answer is no. honesty is the best policy, embrace your shadow to strengthen your persona.

That’s not fair to say Robert. Sure most of us don’t follow a “poor persons” in need of help blog. But, if something caught our attention, whether it be someone like John or someone like the man uptown who digs for recyclables in the trash can so he can buy lunch, and there was a forum to keep updated and offer words of kindness and support, or even voice my own opinion on the subject you can be sure I’d be there. And for the record, I have no desire to hang out with John. I doubt we would have much in common except for the love of dogs and being overly determined to get the truth out when it really counts! Sam on the other hand I would love to take shopping and take her snowmobiling for her first time ever! But that’s because I’ve travelled to many third world country’s and for the most part skip all the touristy stuff and get to know the locals. It amazes me to know their cultures, learn about the individulas i meet and watch their eyes grow big and their bodys involuntarily shiver when i talk about the winters here on the east coast of Canada. I bring many donations to schools in these beautiful poverty stricken places. Why BECAUSE I CARE about everyone, these children certainly are not millionaires and I do not ever expect to gain anything from them except to know that even a small gesture such as bringing two extra suitcases filled with school supplies was so meaningful to those in need. My point is, we don’t all have ulterior motives when it comes to showing concern or support.

I do not travel by air, so, stuck in the US (working on it). But I have been on the reservations in this country and as a volunteer seen some of the most shocking places in what can appear to be a lovely city. There are terrible, terrible problems here too.
I find Belize interesting because it seems to be at the edge of what could become a full blown civil revolt, those kind of things often spill over into surrounding areas and then we, the big dumb Americans get involved.
I am well aware of what’s going on in the world, the US and the city where I live.
But that isn’t why I’m reading this blog. It’s cold outside, snowing when we aren’t having tornado warnings and I’m a little bored.
Mcafee’s story is compelling, interesting, a little disgusting, sad, horrible and funny all at the same time.
A good read. Some of the people that respond are pretty good reads to.
It’s a roller coaster that I would like to ride until it ends, see how that happens. Mybe find out what’s real and what isn’t.
I’ve never wet my pants at a rock concert, but I did pass out at a YES concert once. However, I think that was the drugs not adulation for the band memebers.

I read this blog from time to time, mostly when I’m bored and have nothing else to do……

Reading through the comments it seems there are a lot of expert criminal analysts on this site, with a deep knowledge of Belize, its politics and more importantly its wonderful people. I just wonder how many of these posters have even been to Belize. Belize has its problems like anywhere else in the world, but I live here and feel safer than downtown Miami plus a lot of other places in the US.
I have traveled to a lot of different countries, the Belizean people are the most friendliest people I have found. A lot of these muders spoken of here have more to them than just random homicides, locals here know what, but the media wants to show a different angle, most of the media here is party bias, so dont believe all you hear in the media. If you want more info ask and i will post.

I have been to Belize, and would never set foot in that dangerous country again. Or at least it becomes a civilized society without blood hungry so called cops , politicians and thugs .

Belizians are very good people, so are colombians, mexicans etc ..That does not change the fact that your crime rate (reported) is beyond insane , even if the local media was reporting 1% of truth in Belize would still be extremely bad… you actually are going to tell me that Jeffrey Furgala was an accident just like the many others that have died in the hands of the savages while in custody.. Belize is managed by savages and corrupt officials at low and middle level (sorry there is no high level of anything in Belize) , and slowly infecting more and more people , perhaps Belizians are good but they lack some balls to stop the dirt thats killing them (and foreigners)

I have been to Belize recently myself. I would NEVER go back. I did talk to the locals and they told me of a expat murder (Miryiam Simi) who was raped and violently killed by a local politicians son. Her death was never solved either. We were cussed at because we had a vehicle. This happened from Dangriga to Placencia. Rocks thrown at our vehicles because we wouldn’t give people rides at the crossovers. One evening a group of young thugs was in the road drinking and they tried to open the vehicle door. I was never so glad to leave a country and I have travelled extensively. Maybe some of you should travel to the real part of Belize not AG where JF lived. You would’ve seen poverty and crime. The truth hurts.

Connie, I live on the mainland and have for seven years. Not my plan, but I lived here the first 15 months with no doors and no problems. I travel freely by bus and on foot with no problems. I’m not special, just “galvanized.” So sad for McAfee that he never took the bus as he would have encountered a completely different experience. I don’t know a single person here that thinks JM killed anyone. I know a ton of people that believe Mr. Faull would be alive today if he wasn’t JM’s neighbor.

So sad you would never come back, Connie. This is a beautiful country and giving “a drop” is commonplace. I must admit, I would have never done that in the States, after having some bad experiences as a teenager with mentally ill people .
When I drive, I always give “a drop”. It’s respect and I meet so many beautiful people that way. I do not stop if they are carrying a beer or rum bottle. I always stop for children with their parents.

Andy Palacio’s song, Watina, expresses this sentiment in detail.

I am sorry for your bad experience.

Dangriga: “The Sparkling City In the Emerald Valley.” There is a Scott who self published a book on Dangriga that you should read.

I love Hopkins and Cayo. I could never live there as I would be a perpetual tourist getting hailed (like in PDC, MX), but I do visit often.

Taking the bus is not out of necessity. It’s socializing, kind of like going to the beach in the afternoons.

Hope you change your mind and revisit. No need for a vehicle, just hike out of the airport and catch the bus at the “T”

      Hey Tracker :)
My travels have shown me most ‘Island’ / Tropical residents are indeed wonderful human beings. Something about family and the simple things in life combined with beautiful weather warms the spirit, and it shows. I have never been to Belize.
You’re the first I’ve heard admit the media is biased. I attempt to digest the same story from at least 3 sources to get a realistic rendition. (I MUST do that if I watch American MSM). There are always slight differences, and sometimes more blatant ones, so I just thought it was slanted like here and maybe slightly censored.
I’m curious to know why your view differs so much from other Belizeans both here and on other forums. May I ask if you are a native or an expat? I ask because there is an obvious disparity between lifestyles, and so many of the expats were reticent to disclose anything but rainbows and lollipops. Reading posts and certain articles, there are many Belizeans who seem fed up with the mess their beloved country is quickly becoming. Of particular note are a couple of articles written by a native who lives in the USA now, I hope you enjoy them. Look forward to your response.

Hi. I am an “expat” although I have lived here in Belize for half my life. I have also lived in different parts of this country. Belize is not perfect, corruption is rife as it is in most Central American countries, it just seems to be the way it is. John knew this when he came to Belize, Thats why a lot of “well off” Americans come here, they can get things done with the “gift” of a few dollars. Then when things dont go their way they start moaning about the corrupt officials in Belize. I know personally several who came to Belize to buy cheap land and build a house to sell at a huge profit and not give anything back to the country. I also had the pleasure of meeting John several times while he was he in Belize.
The Belize Times which you posted links from is very much the oppositions news paper so I do not have faith in anything they publish.
The way some people here are portraying Belize tou would think we are all hiding under our beds as bullets fly all around us, or the government was bleeding everyone dry while the police run around killing who they want. Please get real…Belize is my home, corruption, murders, drugs and poverty still will not make me run from here. Where else could i go thats does not have the same problems?

OK, I’m begging now, even though I tell the kids not to do so.

Anyone have access to four desktop computers? I have an LA address to send them to and they will be put to very good use here in Belize. I will pay shipping. I will accommodate whoever provides with a week’s free stay on the coast of Belize, provided they give me ample warning, at the house that is located closest to the sea in all of Corozal Bay. I have kayaks and sea toys also. As far as a vehicle, not needed, but they are on their own for that. They can borrow a bike or ride with me on the bus.

All of these people speaking in this blog, any takers out there?

I have traveled the world. I have been to places of great wealth as well as place where it is grimy. I do believe the risen story. When I was in Yeman with my fixer, he introduced me to some real shady Arabs with drive to get to thier finish line of killing westeners. They are well funded from thier trafficking businesses plus support from wealth symptizers. I have to believe the US government, knew about this because it was in the times years ago.

    Just another day in Belize:
    Capital NewsPost
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO DEATH WHILE IN POLICE CUSTODY IN CAYO
On Sunday 27th January 2013 at approximately 6:30 am, San Ignacio Police checked Cell No.3 where detained person 35 year old Canadian Jeffrey Donald FURGALA was seen in the Cell lying face up and when called he was unresponsive. A physical check was made on his person when Police noticed that he had some blood in his nose and was apparently unconscious. As a result, he was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital for medical treatment. He was later transported to the KHMH on 27th January 2013 where at 11:00 am he was in a critical condition and was to undergo surgery. FURGALA was pronounced dead at 11:15 pm on January 29.

Initial investigation indicates that FURGALA was detained on Saturday 26th January 2013 at 10:12pm in the Savannah Area San Ignacio Town, apparently under the heavy influence of alcohol and since he was unable to give an address where he resides he was kept in custody for his own safety. However, witnesses in the other cell blocks indicate that on Sunday 27th January 2013, sometime around 01:00 am they heard a loud sound which sounded like someone falling and thereafter a loud snoring coming from Cell No.3 which was where Jeffery Donald FURGALA was detained.

The Commissioner of Police has since launched a criminal and internal investigation into this incident as of Sunday January 27 to be conducted by members of the Criminal Investigation Branch and Professional Standards Branch respectively.

John, these Lebanese Belize murders of recent reports prove terrible more so sociopolitical geoeconomics – complicating…The political landscape is getting worse..in the current murky muck for all concerned this really sucks! Any clues whatsoever who is behind the rampant murder deluge ?? Higher-ups ever i wonder inside of all the new separate murder evidence? Maybe this blog exists now to help Free Belize! The new world political global awareness order to help corroborate certain facts now – like this recent Lebanese Crisis as “more clear evidence ” might be indicated here by the deliberate type of Commando attacks.. arbitrary (wrong guy) or specific retaliatory type of smoke and mirrors – an (American) Lebanese’s Hit or Belize diversion / misdirection? A horrific robbery gone bad then turned swift insane killers (i don’t think so) was a brutal bloodbath shotgun murder chaos – then purported beyond the so called usual gang violence locally associated to the general gang problems?? What’s happening in the 1% Lebanese Belize community partially it is being depicted / written by news media by the govt. authorities now ~ that this is more specifically an unknown problem for them now – experts / govt… crime police are like “it wasn’t us this time” is their position…it’s so stupid the real story is follow the money -(laundering) get the facts probably more of the same Shadow Government scandal at the top the unknown covering up of escalated criminal activity – any real investigation – more to it than usual of their standard unsolved murders – what a big puzzle picture. hmmm..so sad..horrible rampant murder!

John, it’s been a long time since I’ve posted but I still pop in from time to time to see what’s up but I have a simple question. What is it about the corruption and crime in Belize that’s so much worse than what’s happening in other countries in the world? To name a couple, Syria, Algeria, Mexico and so many others we read about on a daily basis. A female tourist disappears in Turkey and a male expat is murdered in Belize. What exactly is it that’s so unique about Belize?

A country as small as Belize, with under 400,000 souls should not have anywhere near the crime rate it has. There is no vision and enormous corruption/crime for such a tiny population. Leadership begins at the top. When you have criminals in govt. that never get prosecuted for their outrageous and open crimes reported weekly/daily and the ‘party’ protects their own? Why are govt. officials required to make an oath to the PARTY and not the people? I understand Petra that you own a real estate business in Belize so you rather focus on your bottom line rather than the obvious issues of crime and corruption in Belize. That is irresponsible and should be seen for what it is. Understood…..

@Petra — You own a Real Estate business in Belize? Are you aware of any deals gone bad or shady deals in the real estate world involving Greg Faull? He was supposed to have been working with local real estate companies and I was wondering if he had rubbed anyone the wrong way. If so these people might need to be looked at. As part of the process of elimination if anything. In a small area like Belize is it possible the real estate world is connected in any way to the people “running” the government?

Hmmm 9mm bullets were found at the crime scene where American Lebonese bussinessman Aziz Dib was killed. Seems like 9mm are the choice gun for hired hitman in Belize. What kind of bullets were found at Mr. Faulls house when he was discovered murdered?

A 9 mm gun shell casing was found on the stairs of Mr. faulls home the morning of the murder. I have not seen any police ballistic reports published …has anyone?
In reading past police reports of the many crimes in Belize , I think 9mm is the gun of choice

9mm is the most effective and widely available round in that part of the world. It is also easy to silence if one is using subsonic ammo …. although I doubt anyone would bother with a silencer in a place like Belize. I wouldn’t.

      a single 9mm shell.
      .
The shooter didn’t police his brass.
      .
John favors a Smith and Wesson .38. The Police dug up his dogs and took the heads to alledgedly test for ballistics against the bullet found in Mr.Faull. Ridiculous as that sounds ;P

The story implies that it was a robbery. They shot him 3 times with a shotgun. I did not read where anyone said it was an execution. To my understanding, execution murders are usually a single shot with the purpose to kill. Usually to the head. Similar to the manner in which Mr. Faull was killed.
      .
Mr. Valencia was shot with a shotgun, in the right foot, the right thigh and the back very close to the neck. They broke down his back door and demanded “the money”.
      .
The really sad thing is it was done in front of his daughters. It seems the violence is escalating and still no word on the investigation into Mr. Faull’s murder. It doesn’t seem as though they put much effort into solving murders, which is also sad.

Government hits always look like robberies. Thinlk about it, they attempt to kill the ex PUP Prime Minister two weeks ago and then the PUP party chairman is killed two weeks later.

So 2013 has started with a bang…. very sad. Is there a large Lebanese community in Belize, or are these guys more likely to know each other?

John, while reading the above articles I was pleasantly astounded by the discovery of several new rumblings. Thought you might enjoy this one by Rayford Young.
    http://www.belizetimes.bz/2013/01/26/in-my-perspective-it%E2%80%99s-time-for-a-change-in-2013/

This is a quote from an unrelated but related article, the speaker is responding to the reporter indicating he is ‘alone’ in his fight:

“That is the issue you see; that is the issue that we’ve been asking Belizeans to understand. They tell me what are you doing? When it comes to action, nobody is going to stand behind you; that is what Belizeans do. And that is why the government has been using it against us.”

How sad. What possible motivator could Belizeans need beyond the appalling events they’ve already witnessed…..sure makes me wonder.
I’ll post some more links later.
