Sandwillow: He is correct. It is a well established guideline that copying and pasting an article in it's entirety from some other site to your own does not constitute fair use.

In this case though, it is possible that John has permission to do it. A general rule of thumb (that is such an odd phrase which probably comes from the before time when we didn't even have rulers so we used body parts) is that 3 paragraphs from an article is fair use.

This is also true for images (photos, original artwork, etc). If the original owner cares enough about it, they can present a DMCA takedown request. You may have gone to watch a cute you tube video and found that it is gone and in it's place is some image that says it was taken down due to copyright infringement. You tube is is pretty swift in acting on these DMCA notices. They will pull a video and then ask questions later.

The copyright symbol is not required on every photo and/or story. There is an implied copyright and many sites will state it in their Terms of Service (aka Terms and Conditions).

To get the © you hold down the alt key and type in 0169 then release. This works on the web and most font styles have it included in their upper ascii symbols.

Is it possible to own anything one publishes/posts/puts/whatever on the internet?
Anyone can stick the copyright symbol on anything (if they can figure out how to find it, which I can't but obviously others can.)
What if I copy a photo from the internet and it didn't have the copyright symbol and then I put the copyright symbol underneath it and publish it on the internet, does that mean I now own it? Can I then sue the photographer if she/he then uses it after I copyright it?
This is a quagmire the courts have yet to deal with, PROPERLY.
I wonder how many times a day an article is copied and published from CNBC, and might they see that as free advertising? Sorta like product placement?
Not trying to tell you, I'm asking you:
Are/is there really any internet ethics? is there ownership of what one puts on the internet?
AND: how do I find that symbol?

Hello,

Isn't republishing CNBC's article in its entirety a violation of their copyright? I do understand it is acceptable to quote a few sentences or even a paragraph from an article, but to copy and paste the entire article, even with attribution, strikes me as more than a little... uneven.

Regards,

Hey finally our Congress Critters are doing something smart!

If you do go and testify John, please let us know so we can all watch you on C-SPAN. You will be more entertaining than when Stephen Colbert testified.

Glad to see that some people are taking you seriously now. It's about time.
