My impression of McAfee is that he would throw away obsolete technology which does not serve us well. In order to remain true to this philosophy as CEO of Microsoft, he would have to discard Windows in the same way that Apple retired the classic Mac OS, breaking all existing applications. The problem is that you cannot address the needs of the public and protect Microsoft's monopoly simultaneously. The time is ripe for a global standard OS which is fully open source and runs on the vast majority of hardware platforms, and NetBSD looks like the best candidate. Cross-platform driver portability is outstanding, and the kernel architecture would permit it to run apps designed for other operating systems with a negligible performance penalty. While you would not want to emulate a horrible mess like the Windows registry, you could theoretically build a compatibility layer that provides a migration path for those who want to run Linux and Macintosh application software.

Who would NOT want an operating system that combines the performance & stability of OS X with the transparency of open source? The answer should be obvious. But it will require strong leadership to change the socioeconomic paradigm here. Is anyone smart enough and unselfish enough to make this happen? That is a tremendous challenge indeed, but it's the only thing which really matters where software is concerned. Apple & Microsoft are irrelevant compared to the public's need for better security and cross-platform compatibility. The investors who are seeking to maximize short term profits are not really helping the global economy. Hardware manufacturers would very much like to provide their customers with an alternative to Windows, and we should be thinking of creative ways to finance the development of open source software.
