Belize is a country of contrasts.  It has one of the most beautiful seacoasts in the world.  From my house, I had  a view of crystal clear aquamarine waters, calmy protected by a reef no more than 100 yards offshore.

For much of the year, the above is what I had to look at.  During storm season, however, we are dead center of the Carribean storm pathhs and then this is what you get:

It is a frightening time of year.  Every year their are hurricanes, evacuation and uncertainty.  I have stayed at home for every evacuation for the past five years.  It is wind and water and I love both.  During the last Hurricane – Mathew – I finally gave in as the winds rose and the water boiled.  I took my boat 4 miles down the coast to my condo.  I was the only boat on the water – everyone else had wisely  taken refuge inland.  I was unable to dock at the condo due high wind and waves and it was only the intervention of my close freind, Eddie Ancona – the very Eddie who is now unjustly in jail because of his association with me – that saved me.  He has lived in San Pedro his entire life and is an accomplished seaman.  He met me at Amigos Del  Mar and helped me take the boat to safety.  Eddie is one of the most honorable men I have ever know, and he has been a true friend.  I would trust him with my life.  So that you can put a face to a name here he is (Eddie was one of my employees and friends who was arrested simply because he worked for me)

The interior of the country, where I had my riverfront home (the one raided , destroyed in April by the GSU and finally burned to the ground this year ), is as beautiful as the coasts of the numerous islands.   Languid rivers wind their way through lush jungle.  But even her, the law of the jungle rules.  Manatees, for example, are frequently killed by motorboats that carry tourist to and from the Mayan ruins dotting the countryside:

The culture is no less beautiful and conrasting.  Indigenous Mayan villages maintain their traditional cultures and language.  The Quech’ii, in the South, are a beautiful and curious people.  Young women above the age of 12 are forbidden to look at unmarried men until the time of marriage.  Children are curious and freindly.  Unfortunately, alcoholism is rampant and domestic violence is the norm:

The Mennonites, a hard working, industrious society, have six large encampments at various locations on the mainland.  The are the backbone of the non-tourist economy.  They produce 90% of the foodstuffs consumed within the country.  They believe that life should be hard.  They replace rubber tractor tires with molded concrete wheels:

And their modes of transportation are quaint:

Yet, even here their dissimilation.   They are forbidden to own telephones, radios and automobiles.  They may not drive automobiles. The more enterprising lease automobiles, so that they do not own then, then they hire drivers.  They purchase cell phones for their drivers and the drivers hold the phones up their bosses ears so that they can make and receive calls.  I regret I have no photos of this comical process.

The above comment is typical of about a dozen readers of this blog.  Between them they have poster over 400 of the 2,000 plus comments we have received.  Of the 2,000 plus comments, we have posted over 1,000.  It is a lot of work to read each comment and moderate.

I will be accused of more paranoia, I am sure, because of this post I am writing, but truly, people, can a casual reader be so incensed over a blog that has not personally slighted the reader in some great fashion?  Ask yourselves.  Where is this anger coming from?  Is it the GSU, bored from unsuccessfully looking for me?  Is it some arm of the government that feels threatened by exposure?  Is it the Belize Tourism Association that fears a reduction in Tourism?  It must be something.  Please, everyone, this level of animosity does not come from uninvolved parties.   There is clearly a nerve being exposed somewhere.

My radar immediately sounded an alarm, but, what the heck, he was already here.  There were two possible outcomes:

1.  He does a great job of reporting on the runaway corruption here and I get bto relax.  or:

2.  This is yet one more personality piece and I have to use him as a springboard to tell the story myself.

If it turned out to be option two I had the advantage.  I was older and a bit more experienced.  I also have a lot of free time.

The free time allowed me to start writing my story before he even began his research.  (You do not seriously believe that a man on the run could do even the photo-editing of some of the pieces in here?).

It turns out that the second possibility was the true one.  Josh’s piece is entirely a personality piece.  It is about my paranoia, my relationships, my past, my actions.  It features sensationaist photos and disregards the thousands of normal photos taken by the photographer.  It tells a shadowy tale of me, and disregards the mountain of evidence (only the tip of which has been divulged recently in this blog) of real threats, real corruption, real poverty, real suffering.

It is up to me now to disclose the corruption.  The last photo Josh and I took together:

In my humble opinion, the press, I truly believe, controls world events as much as, or perhaps more, than the the world’s ostensible leaders.  The press is the conduit for our world views, our judgments, our multitudinous opinions and our loves and hates.  A press that is taken in by evidence of non-existent weapons of mass destructions, for example, is more responsible for the decimation of the target country than the leaders who mislead the press.  The leaders are merely pursuing their own goals and can be expected to prevaricate.  The press, on the other hand, in a perfect world, is not expected to go along with prevarication.  Yet it consistently does.  A cynical person might point out that the press takes in an order of magnitude more money in times of war than in times of peace.  No-one really wants to buy magazines that profile bake sales and peacetime pursuits.  We all want to read about death and destruction.  But I don’t insist, and this is really not my central point in any case.  Just so you have an idea of my placement of the press in my world view of interesting things.

By now you will have hopefully read the transcript of Anthony Rhaburn’s first recording, and at least listened to his devastating second recording.  And you have read the letter in “The Letter” and seen the photos of the unfolding story of the letter.  These are a tiny fragment of the evidence that I gave to Josh as a reason for my apparent paranoia.  At no  point in his story were any of these things mentioned.  Instead photos of me carrying a shotgun while half-naked appeared everywhere.  If you truly believe that I wander my property half naked while carrying a shotgun, well, then I have no hope of reaching you.  If you do believe that magazine photographers ask subjects to pose in extraordinary ways, and further believe that polite people accomodate reasonable requests (could you take off your shirt? — Uh, Ok.  Would you hold this gun? — Uh, sure), then we may have a common ground for continuing.

This blog is as much the story of Josh Davis, Jeff Wise and the mass of press of a similar ilk, as it is the story of a corrupt government.  What may appear on the surface to be grace and objectivity, with governemnts and people alike, is not always what lies beneath.

I will be unfolding this story over the next few months, weaving my required response to unforseen, unfolding events, with, I hope, a coherent story of corruption in its purest form.

Approximately two months ago I left my house, by boat, to go spend the night at my condo (Ocean Aire) about four miles south of my house.  As I was leaving I watched one of my security guards on the dock take out his phone and make a call while watching my departure intently.  It made me suspicious.  Instead of going directly to the condo, I hung out in the boat at sea for an hour or so and then languidly cruised to the condo.  When I arrived the security guard at the condo came immediately to the boat in an nervous fashion and told me that a creole man in a golf cart had arrived about an hour earlier and demanded to talk to me.  When the guard said that I was not home, the man became agitated.  He insisted that I was home and demanded to see for himself.  It was only the intervention of the neighbors below me on the first floor that convinced the man to leave.

The following day I was called by the neighbors downstairs.  They had awoken to find a letter under their door.  This was the letter:

You might think I should have gone to the police, but if you have not figured out my attitude toward the police by now, then no amount of explaining will help.  I instead hired a private investigator.  We went and spoke with the downstairs neighbors, who seemed genuinely freaked out.  The investigator calmed them somewhat and then immediately went to my house.  He rounded up every employee and every guard.  He took mug shots of them, copied their IDs, and then made them all copy the letter in their own handwriting:

He then compared each copied letter with the original:

No-ones handwriting matched the letter.

It gets weirder.  much weirder.  This weekend I will continue the story.  I’m running out of internet time for now.

The media has portrayed me as paranoid.  I am a poor judge, since if I am paranoid, it is a paranoid mind judging itself.  However, I am a technologist and use that as best I can for my own purposes.  Shortly after the raid on my property by 42 soldiers in riot gear looking for a non-existent meth lab, I began a program of observation and recording of everything that happened to me.  I planted tiny POV video cameras and sound recorders on myself, some of my dogs, all around my property, in my cars, on my boats, at the Studio 54 bar in Orange Walk, on trees, in bushes,  – everywhere I could.  The first two months were audio only.  I knew that The Government was recruiting friends, neighbors and acquaintances for information about me and for help with “dealing with me” in some fashion.  Most declined.  No-one would ever believe my story, so recording it was my only option. My first big break came when an ex-councilman from the village of Carmelita, named Anthony Rhaburn, was caught on one of my devices while trying to convince one of my employees to help the government kill me.  The language is Creole, but non-Creole speakers can get the gist of it if you listen closely.  Creole is derived from English after all. I will be posting these recordings slowly over the next few months as the World digests them.  I have recordings of the Prime Minister responding “Who does he think he is?”, in Creole, after I requested an apology for the April raid.  I have recordings of the Police Commissioner telling one of my lawyers that “If Mr. McAfee doesn’t like the system here he can fucking leave”.  I have many, many recordings – some 6,000 hours in total.  They are devastating.  They are safely in the States, and copies are in the vaults of Lombard Odie & Cie in Switzerland, and Banco Pinchincha C.A. in Ecuador.
